Baby, Diarrhea and Fluids

Author: Deepti Singh

While Parenting we should keep in mind that like adults, babies can also suffer from diarrhea. The symptoms of diarrhea include very high frequency of motions, sometimes accompanied with fever and a very uneasy feeling in the baby. Babies tend to be very restless during diarrhea, constantly crying and even refuse to eat or drink anything.

This is a serious situation, especially if you are a single parent but can be well treated at home under normal circumstances. During diarrhea your child’s body looses most of fluids, which needs to be replenished.

Treating baby by giving as much fluid as possible is the easiest and well tried treatment. Always remember as parents, for a baby of age less than six months breast milk or equivalent formulas are the natural remedy. For babies older than six months other fluids such as soups can also be used. It should be kept in mind that even though the baby might refuse taking the fluid, it should be given. The parenting key is to keep giving her as much fluid as you can. If the baby refuses, try to give the fluid in small amount but do it frequently.

Apart from the home parenting remedies, there are certain medically approved fluids for babies, which can also be used to overcome the fluid loss. These fluids are available usually in the pharmacies, and it is advised that these formulas should be purchased from the pharmacy. It is requested to parents that not to try them prepare at home by yourselves, as it can deteriorate your child’s medical condition.

These fluids are high in salt and water, and make up for the loss of babies’ body fluid. According to doctors, these fluids contain specially designed formula for babies that makes salt and water absorption in the body quick. They are very handy for home treatment of mild to severe diarrhea condition. We suggest mothers that if baby has no fever, acts normal and shows interest in eating, it is a very good sign and the diarrhea can be well combated from home.

But as parent if you find that your baby has high fever or refuses to eat and drink, or you find blood in your babies’ feces, which is a bacterial condition, we recommend you to consult a doctor as soon as possible. But, even in such condition maintain the fluid intake of your child as it would help her recover earlier.

Normally, diarrhea is a common problem in babies and seldom requires medication. Still it is advised for father and mother to keep a watch on your babies’ behavior and condition. A solid feces is a sure sign of recovery. Any blood in feces should alarm you, and you should consult doctor for this bacterial infection.

We request you to be patient as parenting requires more of it and keep giving fluids to your baby for quicker recovery. After all, all we want is a healthy and strong baby.
