Hang your Hat This Christmas

Author: Ron Maier

Christmas will be here soon and you may already be planning for the holiday festivities. You need to get organized now to fully enjoy the season. Here are some ideas for organizing all of the winter gear that is coming out of storage. Also you should prepare for the parties and family coming in for the holiday season.

First, get your own stuff organized. Think about what you’ll need and what you won’t this winter. Now is the time to get all of those summer clothes out of your closets and drawers and into storage. Keep out a couple of things that you may need for working around the house or for unseasonably warm days. Everything else needs to be put away to make room for bulky winter wear.

Your coat closet will soon become one of the most visited places in your house. Go through and donate coats, scarves hats and gloves that you never used last year. Keep your most functional coats front and foremost in the closet and store dress coats and ski gear near the back or in a spare room closet if possible. You’ll need some sort of organizational shelving, drawers or door racks for scarves, gloves and hats. A rack that hangs on the door with lots of positional baskets is great for organizing gloves, hats and scarves. They’re really designed for pantry use, but work great in a coat closet. The baskets allow for air to circulate and dry wet gloves. You can put baskets down low for kids and leave empty ones for guests.

Coat racks in your entryway or foyer can be attractive functional accessories that will make your guest feel at home as soon as they enter your home. Think about what all people will be bringing in and design this area of your home to be accommodating. Will guests be carrying umbrellas? Have an umbrella basket near the door. Will they be carrying gifts or food? Have a small table where they can set them down. They may need a seat to sit and take off snowy or wet boots. Provide a mat or something for them to place wet shoes so that they don’t feel uncomfortable taking them off in your house. Add warmth to this area with a small lamp or candles.

If you don’t have room in your entryway, then guests may need to use your coat closet. Keep it nice and neat. Don’t over cram it or stash piles of junk at the bottom. Keep shoes neatly aligned on the floor or shoe rack with room for your guests to put theirs as well. Make sure that there is plenty of room front and center for their coats to be hung. You don’t want them worrying about their wet coat getting on your dry ones, so push your own coats far to one side before guests arrive.

Invest in uniform high-quality hangers so that you coat closet looks nice and neat. Their coats will be securely hung. Think about how heavy winter coats can be when you’re buying your hangers. Beautiful wooden hangers can really make a difference in your coat closet this winter.
